Flowing street scenes amid stark architectural cityscapes are a hallmark of D.C. artist Richard Fitzhugh. Born in Washington DC in 1944, he attended Howard University’s School of Architecture in 1968. He worked as an architectural designer and illustrator in the DC, Baltimore, NY as well as Guyana, South America, until 1984. This included short periods of teaching architectural design and illustration at Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia.

Self Discovery to Wandering Trubadour

One of the most exciting periods for an artist is the time spent in discovery of oneself. Richards’ interests began to move toward fine arts unexpectedly in 1974, when he traveled to Maine to spend time working on wooden sail boats. Doing pencil, ink and charcoal sketches, on the beach and having tourist approach him to see if he had any for sale. Previously, he had never considered the possibility of being able to make a living doing something he'd do for fun. He spent the next year and a half traveling between New England and Florida, living out of his van and selling his work at arts and craft shows.
