The possible sale of USA Today has been raised in a blog posting by a former reporter at the over 30-year-old newspaper. The blog comments were reported in February 2011 in the non-profit Minnesota-based Web site MinnPost.com.

John Reinman, who previoulsy worked at the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, said on MinnPost.com that Gannett Blog, operated by one-time USA Today reporter Jim Hopkins and with no connection to Gannett Co., had stated that owner Gannett is looking at selling the newspaper or making it a separate operation. “One of the great media innovations of our lifetime is dying,” Reinan wrote.

No Indication about Sale Likelihood

In his piece, he does not indicate whether sale of the newspaper, which began in 1982, is likely to occur or how soon if that is the case. Reinan instead speculates that if USA Today’s future is under discussion by its publisher, some possible reasons would be declining circulation, loss of readers to the Wall Street Journal, and fewer ad pages and a smaller reporting staff.

Hopkins’ blog indicates that the diminished number of newsroom staff means USA Today can’t compete on a similar scale with the Journal or New York Times on pursuing national news, Reinan wrote. Other factors working against the paper are blogs and Web sites that now specialize in subjects that USA Today features on its pages.

Other bloggers, such as on the SportsJournalists.com site, have questioned some of what Hopkins has passed along on his own site, in terms of its accuracy, the context for certain actions he said were taken, and their meaning and overall implication.

“Think of it: When was the last time you actually saw someone reading USA Today outside of a hotel lobby? When was the last time USA Today broke a story that other media had to play catch-up on? I’m not sure the paper can still deliver a meaningful audience to advertisers— which is, after all, its primary reason for existence,” Reinan said.

His last point is one that observers of the paper have made for some time: namely, that it provides a handy source of headlines from different U.S. regions but is more suited for travelers away from home on flights to destinations or staying at hotels.
