You can often check out Austin art and see live music at local music stores as well. Here are a few notables for those visiting Austin, or locals looking for a way to expand their music collection.

Antone’s records -This famous Austin shopping spot was founded in 1987 by local live music mogul Clifford Antone. Carrying lots and lots of 45’s, Antone’s also has LPs, CDs, 78s, cassettes and 8 tracks. Most of their catalog can be searched and bought using the online store, or stop in for the authentic record buying experience. Like all of the shops on this list, Antone’s holds in-store performances and will buy used vinyl. While not much for new releases, the selection here leans more toward county, rock, rockabilly, blues, jazz and Texas music. 2928 Guadalupe Street.

Austin Chronicle Favorite Waterloo Records

Waterloo Records is the largest of Austin’s independent record stores, ranked at number 2 by Spin Magazine Online in an article titled America’s 15 Best Indie Record Stores, April 17, 2010. Their selection of new and used vinyl and CD’s is extremely comprehensive, using a system that classifies albums alphabetically, regardless of genre. At Waterloo Records the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, there are free giveaways, and legendary in-store performances feature bands and free local beer. Even the website is extensive, with its weekly Texas Top 10 list, Employee Picks list, download store, and links to other independent Austin organizations.
