Hockey fans can forget, at least for now, about seeing the Phoenix Coyotes move.
For the last couple years, the Coyotes, as a hockey team, have performed fairly well on the ice. They have made the playoffs the past two years, finishing sixth in the West this season, and fourth last season with a Phoenix-record 107 points. Although being discarded both seasons in the first round isn't exactly playoff success, it is an achievement for a team that has been owned by the NHL over that span. The coaching staff deserves much of the credit, as do the players for believing in themselves as a team and shutting out all the white noise.
For as well as the team as done on the ice, the franchise has faltered off of it. The lengthy past of the Coyotes financial dealings is a little jumbled, but here's the quick version. The Coyotes have lost a pile of money over the last decade. In fact, in a blog from 2009 in the National Post, figures had owner Jerry Moyes losing over $300M USD from 2004-2009 (and that includes the lockout season). This is not a failure of the on-ice product; in fact, the Coyotes have made the playoffs seven out of 14 seasons since the move from Winnipeg.
